What We Love

Interview with a creative Halloween costume mastermind

What We LovemochiandjolieComment

Halloween has always been one of our favorite holidays. Not only it is super fun, but also it is the best time to unleash your inside creative genius. We have been a big fan of two little "rocking" yorkies, Rory and Lane, for their unparalleled Halloween costumes year after year. Our curiosity of finding out more about the "mastermind" behind the curtains leads us to this interesting interview with Rory and Lane's proud mommy, Ashley.
Q: Ashley, every year you came up with some really creative ideas for your girls' costumes, where do you usually get your ideas/inspirations from?
A: It really varies. Their Olympic Gymnast costumes were something I had wanted to do for a long time, so when the USA women brought home the team gold this year (for only the second time in history!) I knew it was perfect timing. My husband came up with the idea for the Hooters Girls costumes. I know; I know; shocking. The others were more of a joint effort.

Olympic_Hooter.jpg

I always try to think in terms of what would be a great costume or couples costume in general, not what would be a great costume for dogs in particular. I think the distinction is important, because often times if you think in terms of costumes for a dog, then you really unintentionally limit yourself. I prefer to think of the costumes and then try to think how I can modify it to work for Rory and Lane. I know a lot of people like coordinating human and dog costumes, but I think it’s more fun and challenging when the pups can stand alone.

Q: Which year's costume is your top favorite so far?
A: That’s a tough one! I think MY favorite costumes were this year’s Olympic Gymnasts. They will always hold a special place in my heart since I was a competitive gymnast growing up, and, even as an adult, I love the sport so much. That being said, I think the overwhelming favorite based on reactions from the public were the Hooters Girls last year.

Q: I am sure you always enjoy the making process, but what are the most memorable difficulties you have encountered during this creative process?
A: There is always something that seems to pop up at the last minute, especially when you create very detailed costumes and add a pup or two into the mix! This year we were about to leave for a costume contest when I noticed one of the sleeves on Lane’s leotard was missing some Swarovski crystals and had wet spots (drool marks) on it! I can only assume she had seen the shiny Swarovski crystals on her sleeve reflecting in the light and determined they were simply too tempting of a treat to pass up. Thankfully, I insisted we buy extra crystals for just such an occasion, and my husband got to work with the applicator applying them before we headed out the door. For anyone concerned, she didn’t ingest the crystals at all (I counted), just plucked them off and spit them out.

Last year, as part of their Hooters Girl costumes, they wore brown pouches with rolls of cash, tiny pencils and waitressing tablets inside of them. We thought we had affixed everything inside the pouches securely, but we quickly discovered that wasn’t the case. When the girls shook, the fake money went flying everywhere, “making it rain” if you will. A few minutes and a lot more tape later the issue was resolved.

A few years ago, Lane was Slimer. (Rory was a Ghostbuster). We stuffed Lane’s Slimer costume so full the first time we tried it on her she couldn’t walk in it! It was a fine line between getting her plump enough to resemble Slimer without restricting her movement. Without a lot of exaggerated and obvious padding, she kind of just looked like a porkie Yorkie in green pajama

Q: How long does it usually take from forming an idea to get the costume made?
A: I pretty much start thinking about what the girls will be for Halloween a year in advance. And yes, I think I’ve already decided on Rory and Lane’s costumes for 2013. The person who takes my horrible drawings and turns them into beautiful creations is quite busy, so I try to start talking with her in July or August to get all the details ironed out. Since I can’t sew (even a button), I rely on her to tell me if something I’m picturing won’t work, or we will both realize modifications will have to be made along the way. Depending on the costume, I can spend a good bit of time looking at the human version and trying to figure out how to make it translate on to a 10 pound dog. The leotards were especially difficult, because there were so many details that I wanted to incorporate. I often pull together the accessories myself, so it can take a few weeks to find regular everyday items in a Yorkie’s size.

Q: How are your two girls, Rory and Lane, feel about every year's costumes? Do they have a favorite of their own?
A: It’s no secret Rory and Lane are exceptionally good sports when it comes to being dressed up in all kind of things.

393688_454856777888364_573643114_n.jpg

I often get asked about how they tolerated the ping pong ball enhanced chests of the Hooters Girl costumes, but it really didn’t bother them at all.

225964_454856791221696_1553223613_n.jpg

Lane didn’t really like the hood on her Little Red Riding Hood costume and froze when I put it on her, but I called her bluff by pulling out my secret weapon, her miniature rubber soccer ball. As soon as I squeaked her ball, she came running and never gave the hood a second thought.

Rory was a super good sport that Halloween balancing granny glasses from Build-A-Bear on her nose, as the wolf in grandma’s clothes.

In general, I try to make sure their costumes fit them well, so their movement isn’t restricted in any way, and they are comfortable. Their favorite costumes probably are the ones that involve the least amount of me fussing with their hair! I don’t think the costumes themselves feel much different than their everyday wear to them. As far as attitude wise, we have always joked that Lane was thrilled to be a career Hooters girl, but Rory was simply working at Hooters to help pay her way through med school.

Q: Do you dress up yourself for the Halloween too?
A: I haven’t dressed up in a real costume for a few years. This year I broke my own rule, about wearing Hello Kitty as more than a shoe or accessory out in public as an adult woman (but I’m so young at heart!), with a Halloween Hello Kitty tee shirt, but that was the extent of it. I think I end up so focused on Rory and Lane that costumes for my husband and me are an afterthought! I am certain none of our costumes have ever been as creative as Rory and Lane’s though.

Thank you, Ashley for taking time to share your super fun experiences with us! And thank you, Rory and Lane, for being exceptionally good sports! We love you girls and can't wait to see your 2013 Halloween costumes!

He is my dog.

What We LovemochiandjolieComment

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds.
He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea.
He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being;
by the way he rests against my leg;
by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile;
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
WITHOUT HIM, I AM ONLY ANOTHER HUMAN. WITH HIM, I AM ALL-POWERFUL.
He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.
HE IS MY DOG.

Just a Dog

What We LovemochiandjolieComment

From time to time, people tell me to lighten up…"it’s just a dog," or that's a lot of money for "just a dog." They don't understand the
distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just
a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog" and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you too think it's "just a dog," then you probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog"

brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," just smile, because they "JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.”

Mochi, Jolie and Me

What We LovemochiandjolieComment
Mochi and Jolie love me. They love to be near me. The closer the better.  I know that while oftentimes this is due to undying devotion to be near me, I also accept that sometimes it isn't me at all that is the attraction. It is what I am doing. Such as eating. Or looking like I'm going to eat something.

Yes, I admit it, we all think about food constantly, but especially Mochi. She knows my daily routine -- when I am going to have my three meals and when I am going to grab a late night snack. She thinks she should get one too whenever I have one. And she thinks whatever I am having must be delicious. Oddly enough, for a dog, she LOVES fruits, specially apple. As soon as I grab one out of the fridge, nothing can allure her away until she satisfyingly "finishes" the apple with me together. Jolie is a lot pickier. She only goes for the ones have meat or sweets. They love the clicking sound of me opening a cookie jar -- no matter how far away, they will appear right in front of you in no time.

But, yes, I love the fact that mostly they follow me because they love me and want to be with me all the time. As soon as I sit down on my office chair, Jolie wants to be "squeezed" between me and the back of the chair. Mochi always wants to be on my laps. This can sometimes make actually working a little challenging, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Our dogs bring us such joy with their love and devotion. Their loyalty is unchallenged by few human friendships. They love us no matter who we are, how much money we make, how famous we aren't or any of the other things the world judges us by. Dogs are one of the greatest gifts we are given. They are angels from heaven. Hug your dog today.

Pet Parent's Day -- April 25

What We LovemochiandjolieComment
PetParentDay.jpg

The nation’s only official day celebrating pet caregivers, Pet Parent’s Day lands on the last Sunday in April — this year, April 25.

For those who tirelessly scoop poop, dish out kibble and share a cramped bed with four paws, this day is for you.

You’ve planned birthday parties for Fido, bought specially-formulated oatmeal shampoo that costs more than your own, and made

a point to stroll down the pet aisle every time you shop at the convenience store. You might even plan vacations that include your pet, or make a point to carve out a couple of hours a day for playtime at home, a dog park or even the beach.

Devoted pet parents like you deserve more than a pat on the back. But celebrating Pet Parent’s Day with a furry or feathered friend doesn’t mean you have to go far from home or spend any extra bucks.

Some suggestions for the pet parents:

• Snuggle with your fur babies in bed all morning and then go for a jog/walk together later.

• Watch a great movies together: Lassie, Benji, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp, Hotel for dogs...

• Create a new routine walk by mixing up the directions or going somewhere new.

• Eat lunch at a restaurant that actually serves pets and humans. (Try this: Lazy Dog Cafe in Redondo Beach, CA)

• Try on a new outfit for everyone! May we suggest the Spring Collection from Mochi & Joiefor your fur babies? :)

Whatever your weekend plans, take some time to remember who the big dog in the house is and reward yourself with an extra

T-R-E-A-T, or two.

Movies We Love -- Hachiko: A Dog's Tale

What We Lovemochiandjolie2 Comments
Hachi_poster.jpg

This heartwarming true story is an American adaptation of a Japanese tale about

a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master

to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Sadly his master departs one day, passes away and never returns to the station. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station the very next day, and every day for the next nine years to wait for his beloved master.

During his daily visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the town square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty. Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love.

Books on our reading list -- A big little life: A memoir of a joyful dog

What We LovemochiandjolieComment
big-little-life_SIDEBAR.jpg

"In each little life we can see great truth and beauty, and in each little life we glimpse the way of all things in the universe."

Fiction writer Dean Koontz had everything he could want -- a happy marriage in Southern California and a successful career with more than twenty #1 New York Times best-selling novels to his credit. And then along came Trixie, a retired service dog, and he found a new window on life.

Dean had always wanted a dog--had even written several books in which dogs were featured. But not until Trixie was he truly open to the change that such a beautiful creature could bring about in him. Trixie had intelligence, a lack of vanity, and an uncanny knack for living in the present. And because she was joyful and direct as all dogs are, she put her heart into everything--from chasing tennis balls, to playing practical jokes, to protecting those she loved.

A retired service dog with Canine Companions for Independence, Trixie became an assistance dog of another kind. She taught Dean to trust his instincts, persuaded him to cut down to a fifty-hour work week, and, perhaps most important, renewed in him a sense of wonder that will remain with him for the rest of his life. She mended him in many ways.

Its truly amazing when one encounters an animal who has the human sense to do certain things. Like how Trixie refused to use home property for her bathroom. Or how when she developed an allergy to wheat and beef and would throw up, she would give fair warning and then head to the stone floor to throw up since it made for easier clean up. Or how when visiting a friend she just knew that a specific musical figurine was a gift from a beloved male that was the subject of the conversation and as such she got it and hid it under the table in order to have it play at the right moment.

Loved reading how she would stop, pause and look at Dean or his wife in a way that they understood her unspoken thoughts. How she had such a keen almost angelic sense about things. Even when she died.

Trixie weighed only sixty-something pounds, Dean occasionally called her Short Stuff, and she lived less than twelve years. In this big world, she was a little thing, but in all the ways that mattered, including the effect she had on those who loved her, she lived

a big life.
